Contradictions

Recently I was seeing/observing a lot of contradictions. I am not sure when this statement was said/ if it was true by Steve Jobs

“There’s lots of ways to be as a person. And some people express their deep appreciation in different ways. But one of the ways that I believe people express their appreciation to the rest of humanity is to make something wonderful and put it out there. And you never meet the people, you never shake their hands, you never hear their story or tell yours, but somehow, in the act of making something with a great deal of care and love, something is transmitted there. And it’s a way of expressing to the rest of our species our deep appreciation. So we need to be true to who we are, and remember what’s really important to us. That’s what is going to keep Apple Apple, if we keep us us. “

One cannot miss the depth of the statement made by him and he must truly understand to make a statement like that. Now I have heard and read, that Steve didn’t treat people well, or he is a shit person when it comes to people. This is the contradiction, how could a person of such deep understanding mistreat people? It kind of doesn’t make sense. At least I think, the more you understand how world works, the more you empathize. Maybe my assumptions were wrong. There is no rule saying if you understand the world more, the more you should empathize. How do i explain this contradiction?
However, there is one thing, as a manager if you kind of command, order, mistreat the results we get from people is their increase in performance and output. But this puts a lot of pressure and stress on the employee. Obviously the results cannot be sustained for very long, either the employee quits or attempts to take advantage of loop holes. Then the question is this method of dealing with employees worth it?
The other method, managers use is to motivate employees to obtain results. As far as I know till date, this method hasn’t produced admirable results. People knew, whether someone is genuine or not and they can detect whether one is confident of what they say. If not, whatever you say, they will not care. In the end it is not possible for employees to trust a company as they trust a friend for the simple reason both the contexts are different. One operates based on revenues, profits and losses and the other at the least based on good intentions for each other.
The more I observe, the more I see contradictions, we say something, we do other thing and we believe something else. It’s very complex indeed. It seems like we need to Balance. Of all the things, the art of balancing is very difficult. A lot depends on the context. external factors, observable and non-observable factors, controllable and uncontrollable acts/factors, foreseeable and unforeseeable factors, and many more things. Of all these factors, the subject experience  and his reaction/response to the events is one of greatest importance.

Narratives

Narratives contextualize things that happen to us around stories/meanings/purposes. A strong narrative pushes people toward actions based on a purpose, at least in political contexts. But the catch is how long will it take for a narrative to deeply influence people around a certain event. When an event happens, you cannot in an instant make a narrative of that. There is a time gap b/w narrative and incident/event. Leaders earlier had this time, so they made great narratives. With the advent of Twitter, Facebook and Social Sharing Apps, there is very much less time to develop a narrative for one thing people make their own meaningful narratives and share them and secondly a leader doesn’t even have that much time to understand the context, how it fits in a larger context. We expect him to respond immediately. We live in a world of presentism, where now matters more. Eventually we lose sense of purpose. How can we deal with this, to make more meaningful narratives in less time. Frankly I have no idea.

Historical Monuments

What do historical monuments stand for. Well we could say they stand for History, culture and pride for the current generation. But these monuments are built for one or other reason at the time of creation. Beyond that I find it fascinating when we think of monuments as Living Beings. If that is the case, then how much life could they have witnessed, the vicious cycle of life and death. Observing through their eyes all those years, what would they think of humans? While during the day we may find it difficult to connect with a monument because of crowds and unavailability of personal space,During nights when we try to connect with the monument by the touch of hand when alone, it feels like some eternal deep wisdom just passed through us, trying to say something about life, we couldn’t perceive. Maybe for them life is meaningless. Maybe there is a purpose, behind all this meaninglessness. Maybe we are just a bunch of monkeys bidding our time on earth. Who knows? But the feeling I get when I touch a historical monument is something.. I don’t know the correct word.

Ant Colonies

In Ant colonies the purpose of the male ants is to inseminate. Once they are incapable of that, the male ant is either expelled from the group or killed. There are 2 castes for ants, queens whose main function is to reproduce. And worker bees, sterile females whose function is to work endlessly.

For any task or work ants co-operate with help of pheromones, chemicals that hint what other ants should do. It is a completely hierarchical model. Every ant has some function that needs to be doing, otherwise be expelled. Ants have survived alongside us with their hierarchical model, whose function is greatly optimized by information sharing through pheromones.

Modern organizations mostly operate based on the hierarchical model. Tools like slack, emails enable information sharing, Recruitment enables finishing specific tasks through recruitment of right candidates. The people who doesn’t contribute are expelled from organisation. While this model is good for particular tasks, it doesn’t work in contexts where agile movements and actions are required because hierarchical model will choke the organisation with its processes and permissions needed to get a work done. Hierarchical model isn’t necessary when the team size is small. Hierarchical models will kill the creative potential of individuals, a being with an inkling toward freedom can’t survive in hierarchical based groups. Moreover you will encourage individuals to follow rather than create, while it might have worked for ants, it won’t work for humans. We survive because we can think of innovative and creative solutions for the problems we face. In hierarchical models for every problem we look up to managers like queens in ant colonies. It’s a terrible mistake to place absolute power in a single person. Sometimes I wonder Autocracy, Kleptocracy, Democracy, Authoritarianism and all kinds of government forms have its origin from Hierarchical Model. The model might have been adopted/changed slightly inorder to survive. Atleast I think hierarchical models are ancient just like our human ancestors Neanderthal. Ant colonies are living example of species surviving based on an Ancient model whose origin I don’t know.

While this system might work for some corporations, I am not sure whether it works in society. Human Civilizations work on different models, one model maybe suitable at a particular time, and the same model will be useless at other times. Mostly it depends on the context. If civilization models can’t adapt to the changing contexts they will die.

When Surroundings define Who Am I?

We are so much defined by our surroundings than we think. The question ” Who am I ?” assumes, you take into consideration the environment you grew up. I am not taking about the people and their behavior. Of course they are a part of that too. But I am more concerned about the actual surroundings like trees, places, houses and buildings the aesthetics part. So much of our memories are associated with them. Those memories, like the kind of feelings we get when we think of something is directly proportional to these surroundings.

Let me tell you a story

There were 2 big tamarind trees in the backyard of my friends home in his village. He used to play under the shadows of the trees and on the trees when he was a kid.  Somehow his memories are associated with the green color of trees, the blue sky over it, animals near to the trees. All combined will produce some kind of aesthetic experience and added to the memories.

Unfortunately those trees were chopped down. Now that aesthetic experience will exist only in the memory of my friend. It is unique and no will experience the same surroundings the way he experienced it. The surroundings were as part of him as the people are. He cannot define who he is without them. With his death his aesthetic experience will be lost forever from history. The next generation will experience different aesthetic experiences with the same surroundings. The surroundings do change with time, so our memories associated with them.

Finally in defining Who I am, the surroundings are as inseparable as people and their behaviors. They play a role a shaping our emotions and feelings and in turn a memory of them.

Everyone is Alone
Everyone lives in their own world,
that crazy, comfort and cozy place.
Ever felt fear coming out of that cushion,
moving into that uncertain and ambiguous world.
and Oh! people would expect you to be something
little they know of the inner world of the person.
We so much expect and exert certainty on the world,
we forget that this world is based on Entropy.

Oh you, Universe, of all the principles why did you choose
Entropy. Why do you like chaos, destruction, disorder
so much??

Behold you humans!! said the Universe,
have Patience, one day you would realize that because
of Entropy you are what you are.. and behind us it
mocked Whether you would like it or not?

Once, there was this beautiful world,
and it started to crumble, piece by piece
it slowly vanished into the vastness of time.
No memory of it existed in the minds of people or lore, only in the
memory of time it existed. This place was dear to time, for
It’s like all the beauty & wonderful things of the universe existed
in that place at that time. Yet forgotten by the lore.
Such is the nature of time. It’s always watches over us, wondering
why are we working so hard at something only to be
destroyed by it. For time could never understand the inner
turmoil of men, he is only an active observer, Never an active
participant.
